Need a recommendation - Household contacts, individuals, or both

I'm getting ready to import a bunch of contacts into CiviCRM for a client of mine.  They have a number of husband/wife contacts and I was wondering if it's better to import them as individuals, households, or both.  Specifically, I'm thinking of two things.

1) Making sure that contributions that are made online, events that are attended, etc are all hooked to the appropriate contacts
2) Making sure that all contributions made by members of a household can be tracked so that my clients can gather that info for their year end tax letters.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on this?  Thanks!

The online contribution and event registration forms are not really set up to handle "Households" making contribs or signing up for events. Hence, I think you'll want to do BOTH. That said, extracting aggregate Household contributions currently requires either using / adapting one of the sample CiviReport / BIRT reports OR creating a custom search which does the aggregation. The good news is that this should be pretty easy w/ the custom search framework in 2.0.

Good information, Dave.  Thanks for the reply.

Are there any plans to add that kind of report or functionality to automate the logging somehow in CiviCRM 2.1?

Nothing concrete as of yet. If you want to take a shot at developing a custom search instance that handles this - let me know and I can help get you started.
