How do you search for contacts that no memberships?

I was hoping to go through our contacts that have no membership attached and reach out to them. I can't figure out a good way to find any contact that has no membership records attached.

Ideas?

One option
- create a Group of 'all members'
- create a Group of 'all contacts'

go to Custom Search - under Contacts

Find the 'in Group X not in Group Y' search and give it a whirl

(names may not be exact)

Thanks, I have two smart groups, one for all members and one for all contacts. I don't see any "Custom Search" under Contacts drop down in CiviCRM 4.0.5 with Joomla. Is that option in a different version?

If I'm not mistaken in search builder you can query 'Membership ID = Is Null"... and that should just pull folks with no membership ID (and hence, no membership).

I wonder if this function does not work under WordPress?
All I get is a string of error messages.

I tried  the . . .
CiviCRM » Find Contacts » Custom Searches » Include / Exclude Search
. . . option to find contacts who had not been allocated to a group.

There were other helpful options available, too.

Have you tested on the WP demo site? This aspect of civi should be CMS agnostic

No, I didn't. After a few tries gave that result, I went
looking for easier alternatives and found the one that
I mentioned in a later post.
