Custom Fields not saving properly on Activity types with custom fields

I have a client running CiviCase and for a long time now, the custom fields of some of the Activity types randomly do not save properly.  The user will click save and the Activity will save and appear in the Case History, however none of the custom fields appear to be saved.  Some times when you go to update the Activity subsequently, it takes two or three times before they actually save properly.  I've been trying to identify the problem for a while now, and have come up with a number of work arounds, but I really just need this fixed.

Any ideas?

I'm running CiviCRM 3.1.beta5 on Joomla 1.5.15 and because of so many modifications I'm trying to avoid upgrading because I think that will be a huge undertaking, but maybe the best solution.

I have a client that uses CiviCase quite heavily too, with a couple (not a lot) of custom fields. I do not recognize your problem......and I am afraid my advice would be to create proper documentation for your mods if that does not exist...and upgrade : ;D

Thanks Erik...yeah, I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade. I have separated my mod'ed code from the CiviCRM core code so hopefully it won't be as bad as I think it will be...
