Running CiviCRM on Local Machine Permanently
February 29, 2012, 05:52:26 pm
My organization is exploring the use of CiviCRM. While the setup and migration of CiviCRM on my local computer have shown the software to be quite intuitive and a good fit for the organization, I'm not as sure about where and how to host it permanently and what additional considerations that decision will bring up. Our temporary solution for testing has been to set up a web server in the office that runs Xampp and that will theoretically host CiviCRM on the local area network only. The organization's website is Joomla-based, but there is some hesitation to host it there for security reasons.

Is running CiviCRM on Joomla using Xampp on a physical web server only accessible from other machines within the office a legitimate permanent solution? For those running on a local area network can you spell this out a bit more? What does this set up look like from a software and hardware perspective?

Apologies for my ignorance and looking forward to replies :)

If your CiviCRM is for internal use only, then running it on a local server is not necessarily a problem. Your data of course will only be as secure as your LAN, but if your LAN is secure from intrusion, then I don't see why this should be a problem.

As far as software and hardware, if you have it setup and running, you already have what you need. :)

Great. As we move forward from here, is there anything to worry about as far as stability if it running off of Xampp?

Is there a good way to run automatic backups when it is hosted like this? (probably an easy fix for our IT guy?)

We have a client that run CiviCRM only on their local network. They use a specific server with Debian, and there are about 75 users of CiviCRM in the organisation. Runs like a charm.
Settings up an automatic backup should not be difficult for your IT guy, if he has questions show him the forum  :D

Both of these issues depend solely on your sysadmin. They are hosting issues, not CiviCRM issues per se.
