Access Denied issue on Custom Contact field

I have a custom data field of type "Contact".  This works as expected when I am logged in as Drupal user 1.

But If I am logged in as any other user/role, then the JQuery "autocomplete" feature fails. I used firebug to troubleshoot, and it looks like the issue is a "404" error on the following URL:
http://mygroup.org/civicrm/ajax/contactref?context=customfield&id=105&s=j&limit=10&timestamp=1330619133515

I already updated the permissions for role "authenticated" so that it has permission to "access AJAX API" , but this did not solved my issue.

This used to work under version 3.4.7, but is no longer working with version 4.1.0

Solved this issue- I had overlooked setting the permission for "access contact reference fields".  Is this a new permission for version 4.1.x?
