Is there a way of batch changing Org types from orgs to sub types?

Interestingly.....
I found imports for Org Subrtypes [fill type] reverted the type to Organsiation.
However if i then did an import matching name of org and included a subtype column then the Organisation contact type was changed to the subt ype I desired and importantly the custom fields for the sub type were still intact.

Is it the case that a change of contact type where the subtype has custom data will not lose its data? Seems to be the case
