Slightly daft question but I'm doing some documentation
March 05, 2012, 10:21:38 am
Im doing some videos and I need to explain - in layperson's terms - why CiviCRM needs to have a default mail account set up.

I can see why you would want it for bounce processing and email-to-activity but suppose you didn't want those things?

Why does Civi make you have one?

I have local installs where I have not changed the default settings for mail, so if I do not want it I do not have to worry about it.....having said that, if you want to be complete you would still have to explain why. Although most software requires daft settings that you simply accept  ;)

Hi,

If you don't want civimail (or mail to activity) you don't need it indeed. If you do want civimail you do want bounce processing (but might not know it ;)

The problem is that on a new install of CiviCRM, CiviMail is enabled by default, and the site keeps asking you to complete the mail boxes before you can really do anything else.

So for the layperson who is doing a set up for the first time and doesn't really know about Civimail,  they are immediately in a world of hurt because setting up those mailboxes up can be tricky.

Anyway there's not really an answer for this but I will make a note of it in the documentation Wiki.

Tx for your help.
