In CiviMail, What Do Unsubscribe Links Do?

I was hoping to manage different "subscriptions" with Civi's Groups functionality. So that if someone had received a CiviMail blast by dint of their membership in a group, and then clicked an "unsubscribe" link in the email, they would be removed from that group or set to "Do not mail" just for that group.

I read the thread at: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,22550.msg94540.html#msg94540 which leads me to believe things are not as I hoped. Is it true that clicking "unsubscribe" from any email sent to you by CiviMail will stop you from getting any more emails sent out by that same Civi installation?

There are two sorts of unsubscribe links, driven by CiviCRM action tokens.

{action.unsubscribeUrl} or {action.unsubscribe} unsubscribe contacts from particular mailings.

{action.optOutUrl} or {action.optOut} unsubscribe contacts from ALL email communications, including mailings.
