Surveying people one at a time (something for the roadmap)
March 06, 2012, 07:50:12 am
Hey folks,

Not sure how this will fit into the whole CiviSurvey road map, but one important use case that we have that keeps on coning up is for evaluation surveys that you want to get people to fill out on a reasonably adhoc basis.

An example workflow would be something like

1) Volunteer is about to go on a placement. Ask them to complete a KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes, Practice) survey
2) Volunteer has just come back from placement. Ask them to complete a KAP survey again
3) Look at the differences between what they said in 1 and what they said in 2)
4) Do this in aggregate for all people that went on placements in 2012

Interested to hear if this feels like it is on the road map or way of the road map.

I'm honestly at a loss as to how the paradigm for the surveys works currently... I'm actually using other software to handle it, because the wiki documentation doesn't do a good job at explaining how the surveys work.

Result set... great. How about a question set? Do we put our results in after we use other software to perform the survey, and still other software to do statistical analysis? Does the survey system simply record workflow?

I'd love to have it explained to me: how do they take a KAP survey to begin with?

It's something of a mystery to me.

Hi,

Surveys on CiviCRM are by batch, you get a list of contacts part of the survey, then you reserve a handful and for instance print them for door to door canevassing.

Use the profiles & custom fields if you want a more complete questionnaire. Result set is more for a workflow support (did you reach the person, are the answers ok...), the activities custom fields are for the questions/answers

Have you read the relevant section in our book? Should clarify

Hey RedHeron,

At the moment, there are no 'self service' methods for doing things like KAP surveys.  (At the moment) survey is a back end tool that you can use to support phone / walk surveys that are being carried out by your staff.

You can expect to see a lot of improvements to surveys which will allow people to fill in surveys themselves in the next couple of releases (4.2 and 4.3).

If you are interested / able to be involved in this improvements either as a coder, tester, providing funds to write the code, then please do let us know :)

I'd love to test improvements on this... I'm still not a great coder, but I'm willing to learn more! Currently, I only know PHP/MySQL and I look up function syntax about half the time.

Probably the best way to do front-end surveys is with webform_civicrm.
An example would be the civicon evaluation survey:
http://civicrm.org/feedback/conference
You can define your questions as custom fields in the Civi DB, but you don't have to. They can also just be plain old webform fields. That's my preference.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.
