Importing memberships creates duplicates

I imported thousands of membership records.  The contact records were already imported to match to.  Most of the membership records were duplicated.  Is there a reason for this?  Is there a way to remove duplicates from CiviMember?

can you recreate this issue on the demo site? http://demo.civicrm.org/. if so, please file an issue

there is no built in way to remove duplicates from civimember in v2.0 and prior
