Civi Mail crash, stuck
March 14, 2012, 02:59:07 pm
Hi,

Attached is a screencap of my problem. I'm sending mail, but for some reason CiviMailer crashes/gets stuck at the 3810 sent emails mark. There is no error so I'm not sure why or what is causing this to happen. I'm running it through CiviSMTP and the cron job is a mess and I have to use the reset url (mysite/administrator/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/mailing/queue&reset=1) to get it to take off.

Any suggestions or help appreciated.

Thanks,

JM

Hi,

1. The process stalls completely. Instead of completing the job of sending the mailing to 12314 intended recipients, it sends it too only 3810 and the job status remains at "Running."

2. Yes there is a cronjob set up but it's giving us problems in that it does not execute at all unless I use the reset url (Joomla: http://<site>/administrator/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/mailing/queue&reset=1)

3. Mailer and batch limits are set to 0.

1. in general we do not recommend setting mailer and batch limits as 0. You are going to run out of memory or php execution time

2. the cron issue will be fixed in 4.1.2

4. For relatively large mailings like your org, we recommend using the cli cron method. A lot faster and less memory intensive

Thank you so much.

Can you suggest a setting for batch limits that wont' stretch the sending time over, let's say 3hrs while remaining under the threshold of a 2.80GHzr Linux running PHP 5.36?

Any time frame for when 4.1.2 will be released? Any possibility for a patch in the mean time?

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Lobo,

Are you talking about the "infinite loop" problem with running the cron job in Joomla? I am working with Michigan Rising and reported this problem to both the CiviSMTP forum and to a Joomla forum but no good responses so far.

Dennis

ozyank: no

JulesM:

1. We typically recommend a batch = job limit of between 1000 - 5000 and keep them the same. Also for large installs i would run civimail as a seperate cron job every 5/10/15 mins thus ensuring mail gets sent out relatively quickly

2. Try this patch:

https://fisheye2.atlassian.com/changelog/CiviCRM?cs=39065

Lobo,

The cron job problem I am referring to was reported here: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,23685.msg99522.html#msg99522

The UAS folks haven't come up with an answer yet and I also posted it to a Joomla forum but have received no responses.

We were able to repro on 4.1.0 and are looking into a fix for this.

The problem seems to be with Joomla bootstrap when executing a cron.

No error occurs when executing the job manually from

<your_joomla>/administrator/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/admin/job&reset=1

so I would recommend using that until the fix comes out.

@ozyank: have you tried applying the patch that Lobo suggested?

Also other people are likely getting a different error like

Class 'JPluginHelper' not found in <b><joomla>/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/CRM/Utils/Hook/Joomla.php</b> on line <b>49</b><br />

like here:
http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=23261.0

Since you applied a patch from us for that error before,  you are now getting a different error related to infinite loop.

Thanks so much, Leyla. I am now looking into using the cli.php script for processing the queue. This should not require any link to Joomla, however, I am getting an error in that script. I have reported the bug via Jira.

do you mind posting a link to that bug please so we can see if we are seeing the same issue and possibly help with a fix?
