CiviEvents, icalendar feed, and Wordpress
March 19, 2012, 01:18:54 pm
First off, I apologize, I'm new to CiviCRM and despite looking over this forum all day, I haven't found my answer.

Basically, I have Wordpress and CiviCRM installed and playing nicely. I'd like to get the events from CiviCRM to automatically display on a Wordpress Page. I had hoped to use a widget that would automatically parse the icalendar feed from CiviCRM. I'm trying to use this feed:

test.cancercaring.org/?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/event/ical&reset=1&list=1   (with the wp/wp-admin/ removed so it loads publicly).

However, the feed will not parse (I can't put it in Google Calendar either, but I don't really need that). What is the feed supposed to work in?

I can import the .ics file (gray button) directly, but it won't update automatically. I would prefer to use the feed. The feed will not validate in the  Servinghaus tester either that I found via another topic

Am I crazy to think this would work? Is this just not implemented in the new-ish Wordpress-CiviCRM setup? Any help or direction to the appropriate topic would be great. Thanks.

Can you help and figure out what needs to be done to make the ical feed valid?

seems like different iCal processors interpret the iCal standard differently. In particular we've had a fair amount of issue trying to get it to play nicely with google calendar. A few folks from the community have submitted patches to that code in the hopes of making it work

If you can investigate and help improve things that would be great. the iCal template is at:

templates/CRM/Core/Calendar/ICal.tpl

I'll look into it, but, to be totally honest, I am pretty much the opposite of a programmer  ;D  If anything, I'm glad it wasn't just me doing something stupid. Thanks for the reply!

has anything come of this? I am running into the same problem. Want to use civicrm and all i want to do is display a list of events on the home page

is the solution rebuilding the site and using drupal instead?

I want to do the same thing!!  This seems like a no brainer, but isn't this how it's supposed to work and the whole reason why the iCal feed is even provided?  So we can use that feed with any calendar that support iCal feeds?  I hope this gets some attention soon.  What if CiviEvents provided a calendar of it's own to display all of the events with links to view the contents of the events and be able to register and such?  Why that's an idea folks!  Who agrees?

we do agree :) would be great to have a working ical feed and a civievent calendar :) You can check this drupal module out for an example and help convert it to a CiviCRM extension (and hence work also in WP):

http://drupal.org/project/civicrm_events

Would really help the project AND the WP+Civi community if we have more help and code contributions / patches from the WP community. To a large extent it comes down to being willing and able to scratch your own itch.

Wow- I had this function in the Joomla version 3 years ago- and there is still no way to list events in a WordPress widget.
I'm also trying to figure out how to have a either a wordpress category- or a list of events show up.
I'm thinking I'm going to have to make a post for each event- put it in a category- and then show the category-
but- really- I should just be able to place a shortcode- and have an actively driven page with event listing....
