memberships via price set -- form rule
March 21, 2012, 08:34:42 am
we currently have a form rule on the contribution page if a membership price set is used, that prohibits selecting multiple memberships attached to a single organization.

i'm just wondering what the reasoning was behind that. i think it should be removed. one of the primary reasons we implemented membership price sets was so that an organization could handle processing multiple membership types -- e.g. a national and chapter dues fee.

I think this was done because of Membership upsell feature. ( http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-7297 )

So for your example national and chapter needs to be separate organization.

I think we need to reconsider.
I don't think the upsell should in any way impact multiple memberships, because upsell will always be working with just one membership at a time. I guess the difficulty may be with identifying *which* membership should be upgraded. But I think it better that we figure out a way to handle that rather than restrict memberships per organization. That was one of the primary reasons for implementing the memberships via price set.

for example, Eileen's spec and example here: http://civicrm.org/blogs/eileen/price-sets-memberships-multiple-memberships
is not currently possible with this form rule.

whoa - I didn't know about this - I've just told people it will be fine to use membership for 2 different types of subscriptions to the same organisation. It sounds like a regression.

It's good to understand the use case we are implementing a change to help - but we shouldn't assume that because we don't know about a use case for having 2 memberships with the same organisation there aren't lots of valid ones.
