Accessibility Improvements for Civi Forms
March 21, 2012, 08:36:28 am
We at the National Center for the Blind have recently switched our cms to Drupal 7 and our CRM to Civi 4.  To improve accessibility for users of screen readers we have made some code fixes to the way some Civi forms handle checkboxes and radio buttons.  (These were the biggest problems we found.)  When we have finished additional useability testing we intend to offer our modifications and recommendations to the developers.  Naturally it is in our earnest interest to help Drupal and Civicrm be as accessible as possible, both at the user level and the admin level.  We look forward to participating in the ongoing development of this excellent software.

that is such good news :) We'd love to incorporate some / all of your changes back into core, thus ensuring that civicrm is more accessible and compliant with various standards.

We are quite far along with 4.2 and would be good to add some of your changes in this release. If you can start filing issues and patches that would be great. If you can get on IRC and/or do a blog post on some of the big changes u'll did, maybe we could figure out how to integrate it back cleanly

I will try to start sending some information regarding our modifications next week.  Our Access Technology depart will be running several accessibility tests in the next few weeks, which will help us focus on possible improvements.

That's a great news. As you might have noticed, quite a few discussion about standardisation for the code/template in civicrm is happening right now.

It would be super useful to be sure accessibility is part of these guidelines and that the models we are building are ok.

For the templates, I'm implementing for 4.2 a new "in place editing" mode that I aim to apply on other templates as well later. This is not meant to replace the existing system but to make easier to do the 80% most common actions. I have my doubt about the accessibility of in place editing, but would love to have your input on that, may be I'm wrong or that it only needs a small adjustment to improve its accessibility.

Did you end up getting this changes into 4.3 or 4.4? We have a client requirement for WCAG 2.0 to and I'm wondering how suited CiviCRM is and how much additional work we will need to do…
