Trouble with clean CiviCRM 4.1 install on Joomla 2.5.3 - PHP zip error
March 21, 2012, 11:16:36 am
Hello,

I'm trying to do a fresh installation of CiviCRM 4.1 on Joomla 2.5.3 and am hitting a brick wall. Following the install instructions in the installation wiki:

  • I've uploaded com_civicrm extracted from civicrm-4.1.1-joomla-alt.zip (I'm using alt to get around the need for PHP zip functionality) to my ~joomlaroot/tmp directory, where ~joomlaroot is the long path on the server.
  • I then go into the Extension manager and choose Install from Directory. I've tried this with both ~joomlaroot/tmp and ~joomlaroot/tmp/com_civicrm.
  • In either instance, it throws the following error:
    Quote
Your PHP version is missing zip functionality. Please ask your system administrator / hosting provider to recompile PHP with zip support.
If this is a new install, you will need to uninstall CiviCRM from the Joomla Extension Manager.
    .
  • According to the installation wiki, using the alt package should prevent this, as it doesn't require PHP zip functionality, so I'm guessing there may be some other sort of issue here.

I'm not sure if its relevant, but the site I'm working on is hosted with Dreamhost (not my choice). Joomla installed fine, and I've successfully installed other extensions with no problem, so I doubt that's a factor, but thought it might be worth mentioning, as they do not use a standard cPanel, this is my first time working with them, and I don't know what other possible peculiar sorts of policies they might have in effect.

Any guidance here would be much appreciated.  ???

DZ - Chris

UPDATE: I just did a test install on my localhost, and everything worked fine. This doesn't provide a whole lot of insight because I have total control of my local machine, but it does rule out any compatibility issues between Joomla 2.5.3 and CiviCRM 4.1.

Thanks for the Update, Chris.

One little detail, you said (implied) you unzipped then uploaded.  Did you try uploading then unzipping on the server?  I think that's what the instructions actually say, and helps avoid any lost files during upload.  For me, using several different versions of Civi and Joomla, the install has always run without error.  Sometimes, there were missing settings in the db, but the install ran.

Best of Luck,
Ken

Thanks for the reply Ken,

Good catch. Definitely worth a try. I'll check it out and update with my findings.

Chris

UPDATE: No dice. I uploaded and then unzipped. Same error.

SOLVED: Trouble with clean CiviCRM 4.1 install on Joomla 2.5.3 - PHP zip error

Well, I resolved the issue, although the question remains, and should probably be documented somewhere. (maybe a note in the wiki?)

My resolution for the problem was to Upgrade PHP from 5.2.17 to 5.3.5. As it was explained to me, PHP 5.2 doesn't have native zip support, but 5.3 does. I kind of get the feeling this was more a compatibility issue between Joomla 2.5.3 and PHP 5.2.x than between CiviCRM and PHP 5.2.x, as the installation wiki specifically states that CiviCRM runs on PHP 5.2.x or later.

Cheers!
Chris
