Creating Mailing labels and the "Merge labels" option
March 21, 2012, 09:34:52 pm
When using the batch action "Create Mailing Labels" and choosing the option of "Merge labels for contacts belonging to the same household",  this only seems to work when the "household" contact record was selected as part of the search.       If the search results only include individuals (who happen to be members of the same household), then it does NOT merge the labels.

Is this the correct / current behavior of CiviCRM v. 3.4.1?

Hi Sarah
It's not how it should work - it's a bug which I logged on Jira at http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-8338 several months ago. It was due to be fixed in 4.2 and has since been pushed back to 4.3.  It's marked as minor even though it's a core function.  It's definitely on our 'to do' list but, with some other pressing priorities, we haven't currently got the resources to fix it with a patch just at the moment... do you?  In short:

- merge by household (HH) only works when the actual HH is included, as you mention. As Kurund says on Jira, "Merge by HH needs to handle the condition where individual contacts which belong to households are included in the target set BUT the household record is not"
- when using Mailing Labels, 'merge by address' works and 'merge by household' doesn't
- when using Export, 'merge by household' works and 'merge by address' doesn't

Our workaround has been to use 'merge by address' for mailing labels instead.  This will work in most scenarios I guess but has been tricky for us as we have many people who live in large shared houses (eg students).  To get around this I have slightly altered addresses so that each household effectively has a unique address.
