Non-auto renew membership receipts vs auto-renew membreship receipts
March 28, 2012, 12:37:01 am
I am using 3.4.8.

Anyone else out there use auto-renew (recurring contribution) memberships?

When someone buys a membership they get receipt: Memberships - Receipt (on-line)

When someone buys an auto-renew membership they instead get: Contributions - Memberships - Recurring Start and End Notification.
Problems with this:
    1. The previous Memberships - Receipt (on-line) is not sent
    2. The receipt of the contribution page text is not included in this Contributions - Memberships - Recurring Start and End Notification receipt.
    3. This recurring Contributions - Memberships - Recurring Start and End Notification receipt doesn't appear to be copied to the CC and BCC listed on the contribution page receipt.

Why is this?  It seems illogical to provide less information to a member, and no CC to the admins,  cause they choose to buy the same exact membership but make it an auto-renew.

Memberships - Receipt (on-line) contains a whole lot more information and tokens.  When I've tried to use membership tokens in Contributions - Memberships - Recurring Start and End Notification it doesn't work.  Are these tokens not exposed in this receipt, therefore won't work?

Have I configured something incorrectly in the membership or contribution page?

Is this a known issue that has been addressed in 4.1?

1. Pretty sure this was not addressed in 4.1

2. Might want to raise it during the code sprint with dave and then figure out what needs to be done and how it will get done :)

3. auto-renew was a sponsored MIH during a 3.4.x point release and was kinda semi-hurried thru. Hence the below issues. On the other hand, its a lot better to have auto-renew with limited and/or missing functionality rather than nothing at all, IMHO :)

Thanks for the reply.  I'm glad to know that the problem is a known issue, and I think it would be good to chat about during the sprint.

I also agree that it is better to have auto-renewing memberships with limited functionality then none at all.

Hi Stoob

We have encountered the exact same problem and so far have tried in vain to find a solution.  We are using CiviCRM 4.0.5. and this is a big headache for our client who has several hundred auto-renew members without a proper receipt.

One thing I haven't tested yet... do you know which receipt is sent if you send a manual receipt from the edit membership page?  I guess I can test this by signing up with an a new auto-renew membership and sending the receipt manually.  We can't test this on our actual members.

I eagerly wait for a solution to this problem and if we make any progress, I'll certainly let you know.

Just to add, I have now tested the manual sending of a receipt to an new auto-renew member.

It doesn't send the same receipt as new non auto-renew members who get the 'system workflow message' email Memberships - Receipt (on-line).  However it does send the workflow message titled Memberships - Signup and Renewal Receipts (off-line) which is certainly better than the initial email receipt which is Contributions - Recurring Start and End Notification.

You may have already known this, however in my case it does mean that if we customise the off-line membership receipt we can at least on a daily basis send receipts to members who haven't had them.  That's certainly better than no receipt!

That's a nice workaround.  Thanks for the effort.
