Giving a contact type a default tag or group

I've set up a number of contact types to help our users with contact entry. To help them further, I'd like to have appropriate tags and/or groups assigned by default to each contact type. So for example, a new contact of type "Beneficiary" would by default be given the tag "Beneficiary". Is this possible? Is this even a good idea, or am I fundamentally misunderstanding something here?

It is possible to do that if you hack a little extension code....but I am missing the point? What would be the benefit?

You can create a smart group called 'Beneficiary' that automatically adds any contacts with a particular set of characteristics
