Spike in Bounce Type: Unknown Responses from CiviSMTP
March 30, 2012, 07:10:23 am
Hi,

We've been using civismtp for a long time, but last week several mailings returned 1000s of unknown bounce type entries in the reports, which trimmed the overall list by 10-15%.  This seems very atypical, and since the same mailing was used the week prior, with no civi version, OS etc changes, we need to understand to what degree this is preventable.

Please let us know if there is a way that CiviSMTP can assist in monitoring or explaining this behavior (perhaps with logfiles from your end) moving forward.

Regards,

Karl F.

Hi,  what version of CCRM are you running?  The description here suggests that there was a network problem between our server and your server during sending and that we got disconnected from one another.   Earlier versions of CCRM did not handle this properly and would mark all of the remaining emails as bounces.  This has been fixed in more recent versions.

some solutions are:

[1] upgrade CCRM
[2] install a local postfix and configure it to send email to us.   postfix will handle disconnects / delays gracefully.  The Electronic Frontier Foundation is currently doing this with much success.

to clarify,  option 2 above means that you will also configure CCRM to send email to the local postfix.  the postfix solution will result in much faster mailings for you folks as well.

we use CiviCRM 3.4.4.

To clarify, you want us to use postfix (instead of sendmail) and configure civicrm to send email to postfix . we should then configure postfix to relay email to civismtp. do you have any documentation for this?

I am going to check into CCRM 3.4.4 and make sure that we are diagnosing this problem correctly.  I will let you know.

assuming we are making a correct diagnosis postfix or sendmail would work for solution [2]

[1] install postfix or sendmail
[2] configure postfix or sendmail to forward email to us.  the tricky part here is that you must configure it to use CRAM-MD5 SASL auth and configure it with your user and pass
[3] configure your CCRM to send email to your local sendmail or postfix

I have documentation for doing the above with postfix. We have never done this with sendmail.

please email civismtp@uas.coop if you would like me to send the postfix related docs to you.
