Using a Smart Group as Select option in Custom Field

I'm trying to set up an Event profile utilizing a custom field for which the selection option would be from a Smart Group. I think I've read all the documentation on custom fields and smart groups and have not come across a way to do this.  Being new to CiviCRM I'm hoping I just didn't look in the right place and that it can be done.

You are right. Currently not possible to do as you outlined - without any custom coding. Perhaps you could look into Custom hooks.

Yikes the deep and of the pool so soon!  But thanks for the input, I'll see if I can make sense of it at this early stage in my learning curve.
