Is it possible to enter multi-line custom "addressee" values?
April 04, 2012, 12:47:17 am
Quite often we find that snail mail intended for an organisation requires a 'for attention of' line on the label (otherwise it is at risk of getting binned), and for workers who are overseas their mail is handled by a local contact who bundles it up and sends it out in batches - so the address is 'Care of' the local contact.

While the 'FAO' and 'C/O' line could be put in 'Street address' and the other address lines bumped down, this is not helpful when there are other functions that process exported addresses, do address standardisation, etc.

It seems that the right way of dealing with this situation (this is the "correct me if I'm wrong" point!) is to set a custom addressee for that contact, so that the address is printed as:

Impressive Megacorp Inc.
FAO Little Grey Office Guy
1 Expansive Avenue
Middleof
Nowhere

But that means that the first two lines need to go into 'addressee' which raises two questions:
  • How do we get a line-break into the custom addressee field? (perhaps change its behaviour in the template?)
  • Can other functionality like the label printing to PDF cope with that?

The first site that will get the treatment (assuming there is one!) is a fresh install of Civi 4.1

Hi Mark - I now have the same question. I agree with your logic.
A client similarly has a bunch of records where the mailing address needs to read
Mr Davis
c/- His Mum
22 Yahoo St
Googleville

or even

Prince Charles
c/- His Mum
That Big Palace
22 Yahoo St
Googleville

Having a multi-line Addressee field seems like a great solution since it also shows what is going on directly on the Summary screen of the contact. And means we can still use the Address Name field for the name of the Building etc.

Hopefully someone can chip in.

addressee_custom is VARCHAR 128 characters

Alternatively do we think about a custom field and have to make a token to have it available for Labels

How are others dealing with these types of issues such as c/- addressing

Did either of you ever get an answer to this question? I have the same requirement.
