Mystery contacts created
April 07, 2012, 06:15:05 pm
Every few days, a new contact in CiviCRM seems to appear with my email address on it, and pretty much all the rest of the fields empty.  I'm not sure what's causing it.  My Drupal account is the administrator account, which I'm guessing is why it's the email address that appears in these new contact records.

How can I get more forensics on this to figure out what's going on?

In addition - I can't actually delete all the false contacts that are being created.  I can delete all except one - for the last one it gives the error "The contact record which is linked to the currently logged in user account - 'my.email.here@gmail.com' - cannot be deleted."

Which is strange, because this contact (ID=3905) isn't linked to my logged-in Drupal user.  It's not linked to any Drupal user.  My logged-in Drupal user account is linked to contact ID=102.  But the two contact records do have the same email address.

Can you check what is actually in the database? So are there really more records or is it some UI going berserk?

I have the same issue but in our case it's something to do with using Civi when I'm logged in on Facebook.  We can login to our website via Facebook and when I use Civi while logged in that way (or when I have Facebook open at the same time) it creates multiple contact records with just my email address and nothing else.  Our developer has altered something so this no longer happens.  If you do potentially have the same issue, let me know and I can find out what he did to stop it!

Erik - yes, there are new entries being created in the contacts DB table.  Those were the civicrm_contact.id references from my second message.

We don't have Facebook integration turned on, so that doesn't seem like the same thing.  But I bet it's a variant of some kind.  Maybe if you could find out what's going on in your case it might help?

Let me know if LindseyM's answer does not solve the issue?

It looks like her issue is a different one.  The phantom contacts are still being created in my system, any help would be great.

Okay, so what version of CiviCRM are you using? Can you ping me on IRC on the #civicrm channel?

If you do have an IRC chat and come to any conclusions I'd be grateful if you could post them here too in case they're relevant to me and others.  Thanks very much.

Did you ever come to any conclusions about this as I've just done a merge search on email only and we appear to have thousands - most of whom are me!  Civi seems to be creating a new me each time I interact with the database - with my email address as the contact name.  It's doing it for a few other team members too.

Thoughts are appreciated as we're soon to hit the 3000 mark of duplicates and I appear on the database hundreds, if not thousands, of times!  :)

Hi Lindsey,

no one has pinged me on IRC about this, but I have to say I have been on holiday. What version of CiviCRM are you on and what CMS are you using? That would be the first step in any investigation.....but I certainly would not be happy with thousands of me in any place  :P

Hi Erik
We are using 4.1.1 with Drupal 7.  I deleted all the extra versions of me yesterday and merged the remaining two as the Drupal account was linked to my email persona.   Today there are three more versions of me - all similar in that:

- the contact 'name' shows as my email address (in summary, not in the actual name fields)
- I have been added to a group which is the overarching group of our multi-site set up
- in change log it shows a time

It seems to create a new 'me' every time I login. Of the other people it's doing it to, some have two drupal accounts, some don't. Any thoughts are appreciated.  Thanks Erik.

Interesting that you say you think it's happening every time time you log in.  I've suspected that too.

LindseyM,
hard to say, I never had a problem like this. Have you discussed it on IRC with any of the specialists out there? My initial recommendation would be to get someone from the Core team (Lobo, Kurund, Deepak) to have a look at your install if you are prepared (and able) to give them access?
