Deployment from Development to Production System

I'm exploring the possibility of using CiviCRM but cannot seem to find any documentation on the typical release process.  For example, if configuration changes are done first on a development or test system, how is this configuration transferred to the production server?  (excluding any test data and ensuring production data is not altered or overwritten).

For now, you will need to script this via the API and/or other means. This is definitely a weak / missing link. There are some standalone scripts written by various folks to import/export various settings to xfer to other places
