Can't Get Past the Green Bars
April 13, 2012, 06:51:18 am
Hi -
I've been able to get to the point where I've got the green bars and I'm ready to install, but when I click the Install button I get a 500 Internal Server Error and a 404 error (Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request).

My details:
Dreamhost is hosting
WordPress 3.3.1
CiviCRM 4.1
MySQL 5.1.39
PHP 5.2.17

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

If you get a 500 error, then there should be an error recorded in the logs. Can you ask your host for that?

Hi - Yes, here's what the log said (I had to remove most of the url mentioned in the log in order to be able to post it here):

[Fri Apr 13 10:30:47 2012] [error] [client 173.220.42.202] File does not
exist: /internal_error.html, referer:
options-general.php?page=civicrm-settings

Thanks,
Deb

I am having the same issue with a new install of CiviCRM on Dreamhost. I amusing CiviCRM 4.1.2, but every time I try to install I get a server error (500) and none of my database settings show up in the Civi settings area. Right before installation I all green bars for my information, and I can see that the tables are getting created in my database, but after spinning for a while during the actual installation it goes to the server error. There is also no civicrm.settings.php file being created (I saw one reference to checking this file for proper paths).

Any help would be appreciated - I am hoping to do some more CiviCRM installations on other platforms/hosts and want this version for testing.

Thank you!

debsher, your error of

File does not exist: /internal_error.html

is not clear to me. I think that's a Dreamhost page not a WordPress page. I would ask them for assistance.

Tom, if you also get a 500, I would suggest you check the logs for an error message. If it matches the above, then the same response applies.

Please note here: About CiviCRM in the "Technical Requirements" section the team says:

Hershel -

Thanks for the quick response. I will keep investigating this issue - Dreamhost has handled most everything I have thrown at it so far and would love it to work with CiviCRM.

I think the error in the log files may refer to this part of the server error:

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I am having trouble getting to my logs but will keep at it - my working hypothesis is that the settings file is not able to be written, which would account for the database settings not being saved after coming back from the server error (assuming that information is saved in the civicrm.settings.php file.)

Just wanted to follow-up, that I also tried installing CiviCRM onto a Joomla installation at Dreamhost and (eventually) got the same server error. It looks like this is some kind of Civi/Dreamhost issue. I guess I will keep investigating.

As hershel has mentioned, we do encourage people to spend a bit more $$ and get a better and more powerful host. CiviCRM is complex and resource intensive
