Trouble installing in Drupal 7
April 14, 2012, 04:30:20 pm
Before I start, let me preface my request with the fact that I am a total rookie. I dove into developing my first site with Drupal 7 and quickly discovered how much I have to learn.

The site I'm creating is for a new nonprofit my son and I have established. Part of the organization will include members and sponsors, and CiviCRM looks like an amazing tool to help us manage those relationships.

I read through the installation guide and it seemed straightforward enough. I downloaded the Drupal 7 files (civicrm-4.1.0-drupal.tar.gz) and copied it into the modules folder in my localhost environment (I'm using WAMP). Then I went to the Modules section of my admin site and clicked "Install new module." I browsed for the civicrm tar.gz file, then clicked Install. After just a couple of seconds, the screen refreshed, taking me back to a blank install screen.

Any ideas what's causing this? I thought maybe it had something to do with the size of the file (this is by far the largest module I've installed to date), so I have it some time to think, but that appears to have been wishful thinking on my part.

Any insight/guidance you can provide will be appreciated. Kind of discouraged at such an inauspicious start.

Thank you!
Deanna

CiviCRM must be installed differently than regular Drupal modules. Here is the Installation Guide:

Thank you for such a FAST response!

These are the instructions I was trying to follow, but embarrassingly got hung up on Step 3. I went through the standard process for install a new module, expecting to stop before "activating" it and instead jumping to Step 5 and the CiviCRM installer. Unfortunately, I never got to the point of having the CiviCRM module even install.

I tried picking up the instructions in Step 5 thinking maybe I didn't need to get the "activate" message, but since the module didn't install, it couldn't find the files.

Am I missing something obvious?

Success! Turns out it was a size issue, but with a little deeper digging I found a solution in an old forum.

If you are having trouble getting the CiviCRM module files using the "regular" Drupal 7 way, then you must instead manually get them from Sourceforge and then upload via FTP or control panel.

I have downloaded the archive and attempted to upload it via the admin/modules/install page in drupal.  After I click Install, I get no response, just the install page again and no installed module.

Yes, you will need to use either FTP or maybe your hosting Control Panel. FTP is probably the best.

I have direct access to the server.  I put the archive in /drupal7/sites/all/modules.  I also tried unpacking it there and using install.php, but I wound up with other errors that I'm unsure of...I assume they're related to not properly installing civicrm.

I would suggest you start a new forum thread and post the errors there.
