Parent and reqular group counts
April 15, 2012, 03:42:54 pm
I am on v4.0.7 Drupal 7.  I have a database consisting of about 5000 people in the state of Michigan.  We are trying to run a pilot program in just a few specific areas and the people groups are divided into lodges.  If I am trying to make groups of specific areas and they contain between 3 to 30 different lodges.  I started with the smallest area and placed my first lodge into the group, say pilotareax.  I added 244 people to the group but when I did a simple find contacts search for the group pilotareax I get 1023 members and they are from a lot of different places in the state.  So I stumbled on this I built a parent group(I do not think this option is in the documentation in any meaningful way) and then rebuilt the pilotareax group and it contained the original 244 contacts and the parent group contained the 1023 people.

I am under the impression this is because those 244 contacts have other memberships and relationships but unless I ask for those why would they show up?  Finding the parent relationship has saved me some I can now build an overarching parent group and call it lets say CiviMuffintop for fun and just make a bunch of individual groups under it.  I have not had the time to see if multiple parent groups work.

I do really appreciate this group.  I have paid for both training for 3 people and a consultant which contributes to the cause and I am writing because I have frustrated people who took the training (including myself) and they are requiring answers.

Just a small edition I just tested adding a parent group to the previous parent group and they both currently have 8947 records in them about 3000 more records than I have in the whole database.

Another edition smart groups do not seem to  take on the added people.  Thank you for any help you can be.

Can you try replicating your below issues on the demo server with a much smaller  data set.

i.e. rather than using 5K contacts, use 50 or so, and see if u can partition them nicely etc
