Membership fees
April 17, 2012, 08:33:42 pm
Before I can decide for our against Civi which looks great to me, one topic I couldn't resolve through what I read and that's how to manage our membership fees. We are just creating the NGO and want to get it right from the start.

We do have a miminum fee, but people can choose any amount equal or higher than that as their membership fee. The amount is for one year, members who join during the year only pay the fraction for the months left before the end of the year. Payment can be made for one year, six months or three months. Yearly fees equal or higher to our guidance value can also be paid monthly. Before the end of the year members will receive a letter, asking them to tell us if they want to change the amount they want to pay for the following year. Payment modes will be bank transfer and later also bank collection.

Is it possible to manage this with civi?

Thanks in advance

Three issues with regard to your requirements below:

1. Some consultants in the UK have implemented direct debit ("bank transfer") for clients - but this has not been generalized into the core CiviCRM package yet (partly due to different protocols for different processors etc.). There is a Make it Happen campaign to add generalized support (currently for UK - but could be extended potentially if your organization is interested in supporting the effort (I'm assuming you're in Germany based on your email address): http://civicrm.org/participate/mih#ukdd

2. The membership component does not support proportional fee calculation out of the box. However, this is a relatively easy customization. It does support a "minimum fee" and allow members to pay more.

3. Giving members choices about how they make their payments add some complexity but can be done by offering membership types with different durations. Some organizations have done this effectively coupled w/ the auto-renew feature - but that is only supported by specific credit-card based payment processors at this time (Google Checkout, Authorize.net and PayPal).

Hi,

Unearthing this thread just in case. I have something related. We use our memberships to allow people to attend our school. The user can define the length of membership beforehand. We are sending out a reminder mail for upcoming membership and would like to use the Contribution Page to allow users to pay for the Membership they have already chosen.

Is it possible to expose the start / end date fields of the Membership and the accompanying relevant price on the Contribution Page?

Thanks.

Not sure if there is already a membership recorded in CiviCRM fro these folks?? If so, logged in users who access online contribution pages that offer their membership type will see info regarding their current membership and when it ends.

is membership price set available yet such that you could set the membership period as 'monthly' and let them buy 6 or 8 or 10 months.
Sure Eileen said someone had been coooking this up but not sure if it is an extension or what....

Andrew Hunt developed this and it's part of 4.3.
http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-11148

Note that the end-user doesn't decide on number of terms - but rather the admin can configure several radio button options for each membership and offer:

[ ] 3 month membership
[ ] 6 month membership
etc.
