Admin menu in Wordpress in the sidebar

I have the current version of Civi running in the current version of WP. Askimet is the only plugin. The navigation bar that is usually at the top has moved to a column in the left sidebar under CiviCRM. I disabled .htaccess. Tried the wp-admin/admin.php?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/menu/rebuild&reset=1 link. Cleared my browser cache. Logged out, logged in. Any idea why this is happening. How do I fix it?

I'm seeing a similar issue, but noel when I view a CiviEvent page as a logged in user. Looking at the demo site what I think is supposed to happen is that the WP tool/menu bar gets replaced by the Civi menubar, but I'm not seeing that behaviour on my install. Any pointers as to the likely cause most welcome.
