Drupal 6 in trunk
April 22, 2012, 10:23:59 am
I'd really like to find a way to get Drupal 6 support into trunk, because the current approach of having to pull up a branch manually isn't at all workable if you are using git-svn to manage your own fixes and test things out.

What about the possibility of bringing in the Drupal 6 module from the 3.4 branch as a drupal6 subdir in trunk, then updating the release scripts accordingly to put it in the right place?

Hopefully in the next few months we'll move to git (an MIH for this coming up soon), and we'll probably have the CMS codes in different git repositories and isolate them a lot more for the current code.

However we do need more developers to help maintain and support older versions of the CMS. 4.2 will not have official D6 support, and it does take some of us a fair bit of time to support an extra CMS. Sean, if you are interested in helping eileen with D6 support, u might want to contact her offline.

Do you have a list of tasks that are actually needed for the git cut over? As the actual tree conversion should be pretty easy, but I don't know what other back end infrastructure is run off of svn automatically. I am willing to help here in the near term, especially if that would get D6 in trunk.

On the Drupal 6 front, while I understand it takes more work to keep that running, the Drupal community always has 2 major versions supported. If this is going to put me on a tread mill that doesn't do the same, that's a real problem, especially as CiviCRM is looking to be the standard CRM for Drupal. It just doesn't cut it if CiviCRM doesn't support what the Drupal community does. What is needed to reduce that effort? Is that a statement of better automated testing to make it less work?

I'll ask jamie the git person to respond to this email. We are trying to fast track the project and switch sooner rather than later.

Regarding D6, we need a group of folks who are interested in getting new features for D6 willing to look at issues specific for D6 that do not happen on D7 or other platforms. Issues like: CRM-9796. Having the automated tests run across all platforms would also help a fair bit. However some effort and time is still needed, the last D6 bug took us 10+ hours to figure out, so someone does need to spend the time to do so.

That said, large components like Views2/Webform are not actively developed for D6 anymore. The current version is just supported for D6
