Problem with smart groups for related contacts

We have several smart groups based on related contacts searches eg the parents of children in a particular group.  I looked at four of these groups today which had 62, 92, 64 and 68 parents in them.  However, when I did an Advanced Search and selected all four groups at the same time, behaviour was odd. 

- The search gave me just 69 contacts when there should have been well over 200 (even accounting for parents in more than one group)
- Only 3 people actually showed on the search page
- When I tried to Batch Update, all 69 showed 
- When I chose 'Mailing Labels' it switched to a completely different set of groups!

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this might be and how I can address it?  Thanks.

I experienced some smart group counting weird behavior in the 3.4/4.0 series.  Did you upgrade to 4.1.1 from 3.4/4.0 by chance?

If so, I reccommend rebuilding the smart groups now that you are in 4.1.1 and seeing if the counts are more accurate.  I had to destroy and rebuild a few of my smart groups after an upgrade.

IF this doesn't help, please try to reproduce the bug on the demo site, that is the way that the developers understand there is a problem that needs to be fixed.  If you can do so, PM me and I'll help you file a bug with the core team.
