Demo menu language changes
April 25, 2012, 06:29:08 am
I'm testing CiviCRM using the demo version online, but when I navigated to one of the top menu items (I can't recall which item, but it may have been either "email" or "contact"), all top-level menu items changed to cyrillic from english, and much of the content of pages is now a mix of cyrillic and english.  I've re-logged in but no change.  I see no way to change the default language of the demo for my machine and can't do much more testing unless I can fix this.  I've attached a screenshot.  Thanks in advance.

In reading more, I found that similar problems might arise while using the online demo.  Could it be as simple as another user setting the menus to another language?  I eventually navigated to the Admin section and ended up with english menus again, though not through any specific action of mine (e.g. no intentional setting of default language).   Any clarification of this would still be helpful.  I don't want to demonstrate the system to my non-profit and have something like that happen.  Thanks again.

the demo server is used by everyone and as such multiple things can happen on any given day.

If you are giving your client a demo, we do recommend you set up your own install and demo there.

As Lobo said, this is a public demo. So if you and I schedule demos for our clients at the same moment and you want English and I want to show them the Cyrillic translation, we will have a problem. :)

Definitely recommended you make your own install for demos.

OK, thanks.  With Filemaker systems I've used, they pass user configuration to the client so that multiple clients can view the data differently.  In that case there's a client side file or two that helps handle such configurations, and I haven't thought about how it would be done on a web-based system like CiviCRM, but it does seem to be a weakness if different users can't configure the system and displays differently.  What if I have two simultaneous users on my implementation and they both want to have it in different languages or configured differently (certainly a possibility)?  Does that mean one user might suddenly see Spanish menus, or are the non-demo implementations able to handle this situation?

Thanks again.

CiviCRM does allow each user to set his language, but only to whatever languages are enabled. So if you were looking at the site in English and I came along and enabled French and disabled English, it would be c'est la vie. :)

Thanks for the quick reply, but I don't follow you.  If I can set my language, and someone else sets their language, why would that affect my display?  They set it for themselves and I set it for myself, and never the twain shall meet.  Or do I have it wrong?  Put another way, can someone else set their display for French without "disabling" English thereby not affecting my display, or by enabling French, do they automatically disable English (which is the issue I was asking about in the first place - I don't have full control over my display configuration)?  If the former, why would they disable any language since they have control over what they see?  And if so, is it possible to prevent the end user from disabling any language?

BTW, I'm wondering about more than just language prefs here too.  I wonder if there are other user configurations that might get scrogged by other users coming along later and changing things.

Cheers.

We are just talking about the admin user here. A regular user can't affect these things. But the admin sets what set of languages are available. That's what I meant that I could disable English. As the admin.

Hello chp,

This does come up a lot, and there are several posts on how to reset the language, but at any time there can be any number of people on the demo site. I'm not certain exactly how many people in the world use CiviCRM, but when they have an issue or are just looking to see what Civi has to offer, the demo site is where they go. That can get a bit annoying when you need to see something in English at the same time someone needs to see it in Italian, But at least they have this wonderful Demo. If it gets to the point that you are spending a lot of time on the demo, I would recommend downloading and installing a local installation of Civi. then you can check it out at your leisure and in your language.

If you do come across this issue when demoing it to your NP, just explain that there are several thousand people who use CiviCRM worldwide. This definitely says something about the usability of Civi: if it was not an excellent program there would be no one on the demo, and you would never have to worry about language changes.

Cheers,
Jason

p.s. here's the link to the localization page were you can reset the language on the demo. Just choose your language from the dropdown, and select save:

Thanks, Jason.  I'm long passed (past? - I never remember which is correct!) the demo stage now, but had wanted to raise the issue back in April just in case it hadn't been raised before.  So far I like CiviCRM and may suggest it to others I work with.
