unexpected behaviour of civimail using google apps address

Somehow if I use my google apps account as the From email address (office@ratiudemocracycenter.org) the emails arrive in the inboxes with the Verp address (return+b.409....@ratiudemocracycenter.org). But if I use another email as the From email address like one on the server where I have the site, it works ok.

In Mail accounts the settting is also with an existing google apps email (return@ratiudemocracycenter.org), bounces do get in the inbox but I can't get civicrm to grab them. After configuring the Mail account for bounce processing and try the emailprocessor.php

all I get is a blank page.

Mail account configuration is:
   server: imap.googlemail.com
   username: return@ratiudemocracycenter.org
   password: account password
   localpart: return+
   return-path: blank
   Protocol: IMAP
   Use SSL: is checked

For Outbound Mail I wasn't able to configure the smtp with the google apps settings but using mail works so I'm using that.

What am I doing wrong?

I think mail broke at 3.4 did you further upgrade ?
