Events with no start date
April 26, 2012, 07:10:05 pm
Hello,

I'm working with an organization that doesn't want to include a start date when adding events. Is it possible to add events that don't have a start date?

Thank You,
Jason

I dont think so, but in the past petednz has proved me wrong many a times. so i'm giving myself some wiggle room there :)

curious what the use case for this is? Wont today as the start date be an acceptable alternative?

They have recurring events and think the start date is misleading (I'm using the iCal HTML feed to display events). I guess another way I could resolve the problem is by adding multiple dates ranges for the events. Is it possible to add multiple dates ranges for events and let the user choose which range they want to sign up for?

Thanks

I don't think so.

You could also create a Calendar View in Drupal and not pull the start date. You could then create an iCal feed from that calendar. Then no end users will ever see the start date.

So there isn't anyway to add multiple dates for an event. Let's say someone wants to teach a class... and the class is exactly the same but happens 4 times throughout the year. Does the class need to be entered four different times or can you add four dates and allow the user to choose the date in which they want to attend.

Thanks,
Jason

I'm pretty sure someone is trying to pull together an MIH to get support for recurring events - but not sure anyone has quite 'cracked' it yet

All you could do is make the event span all four classes and then have a custom field, or price set option, to allow them to select which class. That's how I think you would have to do it.

I would be going down the 'separate event' for each 'event' in general especially if you have requirements for 'max participants' per class.

Cloning events isn't tricky.

jrichter - what is the main downside for you of having separate events

hershel's option to just provide a custom field for the date would get over one of your issues

I would really like to see this feature added to the events side of CiviCRM. Here's why. I run a medical education firm that runs online courses. Students attend the course online (when they want - no need for a specific date) and they sign up for a skill check date and time (they choose one option from a list of predetermined dates and times). I use the event registration system to have them purchase the course and set up a skill check session in one form.

We currently host as many as 15 1/2 hour skill check sessions per day. To use CiviCRM events I would need to make 15 different 1/2 hour events each day. Granted I can copy an event but still that's 15 events each day I would need to copy. Add those 15 up over a week and over a month and you see how much work it becomes. It's easier for me to have the student choose from a drop down field then enter all that data over and over again. Customized start date and time would be very helpful and time saving.

I need a registration system that allows for the student to pick from a per-defined set of dates and times. In other words I would like to customize the event dates and times. The only work around I've made (which confuses the participants) is to add custom fields in the registration form.  But the main event page still lists an event date that is not accurate.

I hope my ideas make sense. Feel free to ask questions and I think this idea could be very helpful to those of us who need customized start dates and times for events that occur in high frequency.

It seems the problem is less with the fact that the events exist than that they are displayed. You might be able to remove it from the display by customising the tpl

It was me trying to get a Make it Happen together on Recurring Events ie a youth group which runs every week or a course with 10 sessions etc.  I wrote about it at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=48398441 and blogged but finance wasn't forthcoming.

I'm still convinced it's functionality which will be of use to many Civi users so do get in touch with me if you're interested in pushing this forward. With no MIH money as yet we're currently working on a basic way to at least record and report on attendance for our recurring events. Hoping to have that up and running before Christmas.

I haven't figured out what yet but someone has made some changes in 4.2 which include adding a parent event id field - it might be worth playing around & seeing if there is some new functionality. I have the impression it's about sessions within a conference
