New versus Current - SOLVED

This might seem silly but I wanted to be sure I understood things.  A person who signs up for a membership for the first time will receive the status "new", does this ALSO give a status of "current" as well, OR would a custom search have to include both statuses (as an OR) in order to return the entire "current" members since "new" is still a form of current.

I have CONFIRMED, "NEW" and "CURRENT" ARE DIFFERENT. To get a REAL WORLD "Current" count of members you MUST INCLUDE BOTH.  Sorry for the yelling but I wanted to make everyone aware of this as I assumed the opposite.
