How to have custom status to group
February 20, 2008, 11:38:01 pm
Hi,

I have members that belongs to working groups, and I want them to have a status (president, full, observer...)

I saw a status on the group, but that's only "Added", and looks more like a technical status than something I can tweak.

What is the proper way of doing it ? Any suggestion welcome...

Hey,

Group status is an internal mechanism and shouldn't be extended. For your situation, I would probably investigate the use of CiviMember, or just plain custom fields: implement new custom field for Individiuals with statuses and use search to retrieve people belonging to given groups and having given status defined.

Thx,
m

Hey X. The way we have gone is to have our 'groups' also set up as an 'organisation' and then use 'relationships' to create eg 'Treasurer : Treasurer of'.
That also means we can make smart groups of the people in similar roles at different levels of our organisation, or all the officers at one particular level.
Keen to hear if there is a better way, as the difficulty in exporting 'relationships' means pulling such lists out is not that easy.

Hi,

@Michał
The custom field wouldn't work, as the attributes belong to the relation to the group, not the contact (eg I can be the president of the "stupid example" group, and observer of the "human nature" one

@peterd
Wouldn't the idea of Michal works better that "simple" relations ? Any reason you didn't go that way ?

As for creating organisations, well, a working group isn't an organisation, but that might be an option indeed. The problem is that I want to be able to have mailing list features related to the group (or access rights), not sure how to cover that...

Update on that:

A client had the same need, and instead of using organisation, they used household (not used otherwise), and changed the label to committee.
