Initial/Founding Memberships

(I apologise if this has been asked before: I've tried searching on a variety of keywords, but couldn't find anything).

The organisation I'm supporting has an initial membership type of "Founding Member" that's only available for the first year of the organisation, which ends on June 30th 2012. After this date, no-one should be able to create a new Founding Member membership.

However, once the year is complete, which is in June 2013 (don't ask), all existing Founding Members should be able to renew their foundation membership.

Is this possible with CiviCRM 4.1.1? I can't see any way to prevent new memberships from a particular date, while still allowing renewals.

i think there is another thread around currently about restricting certain membership types to only contacts who already have a particular membership type - if so it sounds like it would do your problem too - good luck hunting - if i spot it i will try and paste link back here
