Fact Check - Current Users
May 01, 2012, 11:12:13 am
Hi All,

On one of the civicrm.org pages, it states that there have been several thousand downloads and that there are five thousand current active users of CiviCRM.

Does anyone know how they arrived at the number five thousand?

Regards,
Penn

There is a pingback feature (where each install gives information about general stuff like the version).

We remove quite a few info for privacy reasons, and the pingback can be disabled on each install in one click. So the 5K numbers might be widely under the real number of installs, or might include some test installs too.

Bottom line, it's impossible to know how many installs for any open source projects ;)

I'm monitoring on twitter the number of tweets that have a link containing civicrm/*  (so a civicrm page about event, donation, petition...), the number is lower, but it's mesuring something different (almost all of my customers don't have "public" sites but are using it to manage their members, send emails and other "back office" tasks. Happy to share that data if  you are in a dataminding mood

"several thousand downloads" ?

Yes, actually over 386,000 downloads to be exact. :)

Hmmm. This brings up several questions in my mind. 1. What data is pinged back? 2. since we have 3 localhost copies of CiviCRM, does this mean that you are receiving 3 pings form us or, doe local host copies even ping back? 3. How would you explain the vast difference between downloads and active current users? 4. Sure, your tweet numbers would be interesting to look at.

Warm Regards,
Penn

Yes, actually over 386,000 downloads to be exact. :)

Up to 430,00 downloads now. That's 43,000 downloads in 5.5 months, almost 8000 a month, which means 260 downloads a day.

And of course there are service providers (such as myself) who download once and then install multiple sites based on that one download. :)
