I'm trying to reconcile membership payments from pricesets as my total contributions exceeds the number of members that are new or renewed this year using data in the Membership Dashboard.

In my sql queries I end up with 14 members in one membership category who paid dues this year,  but under the civi dashboard I have only 13.  After I went through the list I discovered that one members who had a current membership with a start date of Jan 2011 and end date of Dec 2013., but then  renewed  this year.  The start date is the start date from the old membership (Jan 2011) and the end date was extended to Dec 2014.

So even though he did renew during this year, it does not show up in the dashboard table for 2012 renewals since the start date is less than Jan 1 2012.   

Is there a way to change the criteria in the Membership dashboard to fix this?

Remember all "Dashlets" are just searches with the flag set and the look and feel chosen as bar or pie or whatever. THe membership dashboard is simply a single column layout with that search/report chosen. You could change this to a different one if you wanted but that would be changing code. I try to use it as it is so I can keep things "Vanilla" usually there is a work around for something you want to do, it just might not be simple or elegant.
