Spurious opt-outs
May 02, 2012, 12:31:45 pm
Our organization has recently started using CiviMail to send our concert announcements and thought all was going well until our subscribers started getting random opt-out confirmation e-mails when they had not opted out. The record also shows "no bulk e-mail". The reports of the most recent mailings do not show these unsubscribes, they happen long after mailings have gone out and the people who unsubscribe didn't even get those particular mailings. The first time it happened I immediately contacted our host to check for malicious activity but they found nothing. I don't have a clue where to look for the problem, nor can I assess how serious it is as far as security breaches are concerned. Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated. Running Joomla 1.5.26, CiviCRM 3.4.5. with Akeeba Admin Tools installed and (hopefully correctly) configured. Thanks!

Hi,

The most likely reason is that your subscriber forwarded the email to several persons, that forwarded them... and somewhere in the chain, someone clicked on the unsubscribe link at the bottom, unsubscribing the first person in the chain (your subscriber).

IMO, would be good to record the unsubscribe as an activity to make it easier to find why/when a contact has been unsubscribed, but it's likely it won't happen unless someone provides the time or money to make it happen.

Oh gosh, I never would have come up with that explanation! Makes sense of course, thanks so much.
