project management?
May 04, 2012, 09:37:52 am
Is there some kind of project management possible? i.e. closed groups with protected access to areas and/or documents, a common calendar, things like that. We have groups who work on specific themes or teams for different tasks.

Separate areas of the website for different teams ("groups" in CiviCRM) is pretty straightforward to do in a Drupal + CiviCRM installation using the Group_Roles module which extends CiviCRM to set Drupal roles (and then roles can be used to control access to section of your site). Calendaring is a bit trickier but I think do-able with Views module (again in Drupal).

For a WordPress / CiviCRM install I think you'd need to investigate available plugins in the WP side and potentially build some integration to CiviCRM for access control.

Hi Fragino

We do all our PM with a combination of Drupal and CiviCRM: we took some inspiration from Basecamp and did it with Drupal a bit like this http://drupalize.me/videos/basecamp-cloned-drupal-diwd-08 but we store leads in Civi, convert them to clients and pull details into client projects. We use Drupal's OG for the closed groups and once you've got that going you can do milestones, tasks, calendar stuff and whatever you want easily. Works really well.

Thanks a lot for this encouraging information. We will be using civicrm with wordpress. Hopefully the access control system will be available soon for wp, too.

access control for wordpress is not part of 4.2 nor is it scheduled for 4.3

if there are civi + wp integrators / community who want to see the above, starting to work on it now might be a good thing.
