Adding custom fields to Profiles in civiCRM 4.1.2 in Wordpress

I have been preparing civiCRM 4.1.2 for use in Wordpress, but cannot add custom fields to a profile for user sign-in.  The custom fields do not appear in the New Profile options.  Any suggestions?

Please ensure that your custom fields extend either Contact or Individual and is not part of a multiple-record custom group

Has anyone come up with a solutions for user sign in ?  Current members should be able to sign into wordpress before registering for another class so they dont need to imput all their information again.   Right now I dont see any way for members to log in.  SO every time a person registers for a new event, membership, etc a new profile gets set up in the admin...  Please help figure this out..
