Household Addressing for 1.8
May 17, 2007, 05:03:05 pm
We've spent some time digesting the discussion and suggestions on the mailing list and wiki regarding improvements in Household addressing / mailing. This is potentially a gnarly issue - but we've tried to come up with a "phase 1" solution that solves quite a few of the problems identified in the Householding discussion.

The specifications are on the Issue Tracker as CRM-1917. If you are interested in this functionality - it would be great if you reviewed the specification and posted any "reality check" comments or questions here.

Hi Dave - back on this project in NZ after a long break (Aus elections  ;))

Trying to unravel 'best use' of households for dealing with sending single mail item to shared households. Several problems, first of which links directly to this post, hence using 'reply'.

In http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-1917 you stated "If "Create new household" case - keep the Address fieldset visible, but replace the fieldset legend with "Household Address".

I was hoping (despite it not having worked for me) that this meant that if a have an individual with address fields all completed that I need to allocate to a yet-to-be-created Household, I could click on "Use Household Address" and "Create New Household" - and that this would flip the individuals address records in to the fields for the Household.

It doesn't. And worse, I lose sight of my individual's address fields so I can't even copy and paste them across.

Is this how you planned it to work, or is it a bug?

Second. Having allocated individuals to households (through the above or via Relationship fields) when I then Adv Search for members in an area and go More Actions - Mailing Labels - I would expect to get the Household as a shared entity rather than all individuals at the household getting separate labels. How should I go about this?

Third. If I was to search for a particular Surname in order to find all members of a yet to be created Household, and then go More Actions - Add Contacts to Households, I would expect to be able to create a new Household if necessary but am not given that option.

Look fwd to your thoughts.

I think this is a "bug" (or at least inconvenient behavior for what seems like a common use case). Most of the QA on this was done with the workflow of New Individual >> Use Household >> Create New Household rather than your workflow of starting with an existing individual. I've filed a fix for this for 2.0:
http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2639

I don't think there's a perfect solution for this yet :-(  Some sites are solving this by connecting all individuals to households - and then limiting search to Households only. The new custom search framework (2.0) could be used to create a dedicated search form which "knows" how to eliminate individual records from the  result set IF they are members of a household. I guess you could also tag individuals who are NOT in households and then do your mailing labels as 2 searches - 1 for households and 1 for tagged No-household individuals.

This would be a nice code contribution for a future release :-)
