Member changing membership level when renewing
February 22, 2008, 05:14:30 pm
If member selects a new member level it is considered a new membership, not a renewal and both are monitored under their member profile. Is there a way to allow the member to change their level (upgrade or downgrade) when they renew with the original start and end dates?  If they have one $35 membership that expires on 3/15/2008 and they renew with a $50 membership on 2/25/2008 I would like the original membership to continue rolling with a new end date of 3/15/2009, not a new membership with an end date of 2/24/2008.

This is not currently possible without modifying / extending the code. There are some ideas / specifications for ways in which CiviMember's renewal behavior could be made more flexible / configurable here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/CiviMember+-+Phase+2+Specifications

Would be good for you to review these and add your requirement(s) if they're different. AND if this functionality is important to your organization consider sponsoring or contributing resources to help make this happen. (There is currently no definite timing on the roadmap for implementing any of the features on that page.)
