mailout stalling and now not connecting
May 18, 2012, 04:02:51 am
Attempting my first large mailout. Started manually (ie not cron job) 844 of 2,700 sent successfully and then it just stalled.
Status was "running" nothing untoward with bounces.
Next time managed 471 out of 1,700 before stalling.
The next try,  nothing was sent but received following error message 1 (which I attach as text file coz it's doing weird things here.)

and one bounce with bounce reason :

""Failed to connect to civismtp.uas.coop:20095 [SMTP: Failed to connect
socket: Connection timed out (code: -1, response: )"

And now can't even send a test mailing but get slightly different error message which I attach as error2.

BTW I'm running 4.1.0 with both patches

 ???

There are no network problems in our DC at this time.

Please make sure that your host is not blocking outgoing connections to port 20095
Also check that your host is not having network problems

once you have checked those things, please try again and let us know how it goes.

I had already asked host to unblock 20095 and they confirmed that it is open. They were not having network problems.
They informed me that "No PHP errors with regards to this issue are being recorded to any error_log files on your site", but nevertheless they altered the htaccess file to increase php_value max_execution_time and php_value max_input_time  to 1800.  They suggested setting the throttle rate to one per second.

I tried another mailout today a similar sort of result as before ie
status stuck at 'running'(and I have left it there rather than cancelled)
report shows 387 successful deliveries and 74 bounces out of 1579 recipients.
but this time civi error message was not the "Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred." as before but was as follows

"Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@conservationsa.org.au and inform them of the time the

error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the

request.

So I am at a loss and my host seems to think they can do nothing more and suggest I get back to you.
Should I try the throttling and if so what setting - and change any other of the settings in "mailer settings"? It would appear that they only apply to the cron jobs. I so don't want to go near cron jobs yet - it looks ridiculously hard.

If it's no help to you leaving the job as "running" can you let me know and at least I can cancel it and limp through the remaining recipients.

Still leaves me at a loss for the next mailout?  :'(

ok, executing a mailing through the browser is fraught with problems for anything bigger than just a few email addresses.  This is because a web browser can timeout or get disconnected very easily.

we recommend that you use crons to avoid the problems you are seeing.
