From Address / VERP / Help
May 23, 2012, 10:37:19 am
Hi,

So I have read and read and read and still don't know how or if I can get emails to appear with a non-VERP from address.

My client feels strongly that the VERP addresses are ugly and will be considered SPAM by many email systems.  I really don't know the answer to that but i agree the addresses seem ugly by any standard.  I understand their potential role to knowing if a particular recipient failed for a particular email but the fact remains that when sending from systems like MailChimp or Constant Contact we don't get from addresses like this.

I will say briefly how I have things configured

1) We are hosted at Blue Host and I am simply using "Mail" as my outbound sending setting.  I tried to setup Google as outbound SMTP but without luck.

2) I have setup a bounce processing account.  I think I was forced to do this before I could send out bulk emails of any kind.  This account is a Google address for the domain.  That is the organization uses Google for their domain email and we setup a box for bounces.  We are using IMAP for this.

3) While testing I am leaving all "Tracking" settings OFF.  My assumption is that it is for the tracking that this is needed in part but maybe I am mistaken.

4) I set both a from and a reply to on the mailing but the only one that seems to "work" is the reply to.  I receive my mail in Mail.app and it shows from as b.18.26.dcf88b91a5269b34@domanin.ORG while reply is as I set it.

So the question.  Is there any way to make it so most or all our emails have a controllable from address that the recipient will see when they get the mail?

I would not ask this question again (as it's all over the forums) if I felt I had not exhausted trying and reading to go effect.

Many thanks in advance,

Wes

Hi,

The VERP address for bounces are a standard way of doing it AND it isn't visible by users.

You got an ugly from (well, reply to) address if you ask civi to track replies. The easiest workaround is to be sure you don't check it and voila, works in an invisible way.

Hi X+,

Thanks for the response.  I unfortunately have tried this many many times and have not gotten the VERP from/reply to go away.  In every case I have NO tracking checkboxes set while creating the mailing to test with.  In every case it still comes through with the VERP from/reply.

The ONLY thing I can think of that might not be standard (yet) is that I running in WordPress.

I think the only message I can get to come through without it when I send a test email while setting up mail settings for Civi over-all....that is the outbound mail settings.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

Wes

Hi,

So it might be something with your host that forces the from to be the envelope address. Can you check the mail logs to see what is really sent to the mail server?

In general, a "few bucks hosting" and "quality enough to do masss mailing" don't work very well together. blue host has been mentioned already, you might want to check the forum is your problem was already happening for others and if they solved it.
