Is there a way to store the phone country code for a phone number for a contact in a separate field?

Not in the standard, you could set up a custom field for it, are you aware of the custom data option in CiviCRM?

The table civicrm_country has a field to store the country prefix for the phone. I the sql to init it properly, but the code above to automatically add the prefix to the phone needs to be added still
