Errors on sending a mailing
May 25, 2012, 11:24:41 am
Hi

We have been active CiviSMTP users for several years now with literally NO problems.  Great service guys!  Thanks so much!

Today one of our leadership went to send out a mailing and this is what he got.  I have some screenshots but they are bigger than 64K unfortunately.  Here is what they say:

1. Invalid response code received from SMTP (outbound mail) server while attempting to send email.  This is often caused by a misconfiguration in the CiviCRM Outbound Email Settings.

2. a backtrace which it seems I was able to get down below 64K screenshot so it is attached.

Any ideas or help?

Thanks
Richard

our systems check out OK.

This seems like some settings might have been changed in your outbund mail settings.

[1]  have you upgraded CCRM recently?
[2] please check your outbound mail settings and be sure they are set to civismtp.uas.coop port 20095 and please make sure that auth is enabled with the correct username and password

Hmm.  It only happened the one time yesterday.  I tried a test mailing today and all seemed well.  I'll chalk it up to Internet glitching and keep an eye on things.

Thanks for taking a look.

Interesting - we have the same situation: we've been using CiviSMTP for over a year with no problems, but just moved the site to a new server and tried to send mailings again (caveat: we hadn't done mailings in awhile even on the old server, so the move to the new server might not be the cause of the problem). The configuration tests out fine both on the CiviSMTP site and on the CiviCRM SMTP configuration page, but we get the same error (see below) when trying to send a test message for an actual mailing.

What is different about how mailings are sent on the CiviCRM SMTP settings page versus when testing out a mailing that would cause an error to happen in one situation but not in the other?

Error message:

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.
Invalid response code received from SMTP (outbound mail) server while attempting to send email. This is often caused by a misconfiguration in the CiviCRM Outbound Email settings. Please verify the settings at Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Outbound Email (SMTP).

The problem with mailing from the first post was due to big attachments attached to bulk mails.

allowed size for emails through our system is 100K including attachments.

are you attaching attachments to your mailings when testing civimail?

Aha! Thank you for this tip. That turned out to be the problem - I hadn't even realized there was an attachment on the mailing I was testing with. Just tested with a smaller mailing and it went through fine. Apologies for the false alarm, and thank you for the quick response!
