Should Drupal modules be hosted on drupal.org?
May 29, 2012, 05:56:12 am
It is apparent from what I've been reading recently on this forum that some of the Drupal integration modules, notably those that are bundled with CiviCRM, do not necessarily work as advertised (I'm looking at CiviGroup Roles Sync) in particular, and have little or no documentation to assist users. These modules are not hosted on Drupal.org for some reason, and so are unable to take advantage of the facilities offered there.

Others, such as the outstanding Webform CiviCRM integration module (and I see also a Civimember PLUS Roles Sync module, a variation on the bundled module) are hosted on drupal.org

Is there a correlation?

I was wondering whether, if all of the CiviCRM related modules were to be hosted on drupal.org, they might benefit from more TLC and consequently get improved, making them more useful for the community. I don't see the value in bundling modules that don't have any documentation and in numerous cases don't seem to work anyway.

What was the rationale for removing modules from drupal.org? Is it time to rethink?

Hi,

Not sure it's a reason, but it has to (or used to) be licensed under the gpl to be on drupal, but they are agpl3.

As for the lack of documentation or having bugs, how would it improve to be hosted on drupal rather than on civicrm? Are they in general facilities that you have on drupal & miss?

We hope that more folks will step up and contribute to things like documentation and bug fixes if they are distributed to a larger community.

I do think that quite a few folks have it working on their site for their specific use case(s). If folks want to take over ownership of any of the modules, we'd be happy to work with them and give them svn commit access

Graham: Would you be interested in spearheading a documentation effort for those modules?

One benefit to not having a module be bundled with civicrm core is that it allows for separate issue tracking and releases not tied to those of civicrm core.
I think D.O. is a great host, but others may prefer github etc. The structure of the new extensions directory at civicrm.org/extensions will allow them to be hosted everywhere, but provides a unified directory. Win-win.
