Setting the status of a Contribution associated with a Participant causes the participant status to change as well under some circumstances, as described by Dave Greenberg in the "5 different workflows" part of this post: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,10770.msg46923.html#msg46923

Is there a way to override that behavior?  I have built functionality that allows for multiple participant_payment records per participant, and the total paid is summed over all those, so it really doesn't make sense for a registration to be cancelled if one of those payments is cancelled.
