In Memory of Donations
May 31, 2012, 08:37:49 pm
A staff person on one of our sites noticed that:

When someone (person A) makes and in Memory of (of person B) donation
a) a Contact record is created for person B - with person's A Email address
b) person B - checkbox in Demographics -> Contact is deceased is NOT marked

This could potentially lead to embarrassing situations, like Email to Dear person B (deceased) -> sent to the survivor's (person A's) Inbox.

Of course the problem in case of a public donation form is that it would be a little scary to be giving anonymous permissions to mark someone as deceased.

Any ideas on how to handle this?

Of course the fact that the deceased ended up with an Email address is - user error - the donor put her own Email address in the Honoree Section (for an In Memory donation it is indeed unlikely you would fill in - in this case - your mom's old Email address). She should have left it blank. Perhaps that's all I need to try and do here - add some explanation to prevent this.

There is another problem here too.
If say Mr Jones gives £25 in memory of Mrs Jenny Jones, AND there is more than one Jenny Jones on the database, the system has no idea which Jenny Jones to soft credit and can put it against the wrong one because there is no display for the user to select the correct contact. We have only just picked this up and there are potentially dozens of wrong soft credits.
Anyone else seen this?

You can edit the (default) dedupe rules and tighten things up by adding fields (eg Email address) and/or change the weighting.
